ADVENTURE AWAITS: Eastern Free State – Fouriesburg

4×4 Mega World – Bloemfontein Branch were asked to prepare a weekend of back-road traveling for customers resident in Hoopstad, Brandfort & Winburg in the Free State. This is the fourth year running that the group travelled with Dreyer van Niekerk, our Bloemfontein branch manager. This year there were seven 4×4 vehicles and 15 people.
In August 2018 4×4 Mega World Bloemfontein branch took their customers to the small town of Fouriesburg (S28°37’21.09” E28°12’39.22”). Fouriesburg is a small town situated at the junction of the R711 and R26 routes in the eastern Free State, South Africa. It is near the Maluti Mountains and only 10 km from Caledon’s Poort border post, which gives access to Lesotho.
GEOGRAPHY & HISTORY
Fouriesburg is a town located in the Thabo Mofutsanyana region of Free State Province in South Africa. This town is situated 12 km from Lesotho and has a fantastic view of the Maluti Mountains. Fouriesburg was established in 1982 on a farm named Groenfontein and is named after its owner, Christoffel Fourie. This area served as a temporary seat of the Free State government during the Anglo-Boer War. The majority of its population speaks the Sotho language.
THE TRIP & DESTINATION
On our way to Fouriesburg we stopped at the small little town of Rosendal at a shop called “Chris se Winkel” the owner Chris van Niekerk alias Francois Rossouw (Krokodil) who played the owner of the Coffee Shop in 7de Laan.
Meiringskloof Resort is situated 2km outside Fouriesburg and offers big shaded camp sites with modern, clean ablutions, electricity and beautiful sandstone self catering chalets, with their own braai area and in-door fire place.
Activities around Meiringskloof include hiking trails, horse riding, fly fishing, birdwatching and 4×4 trails. There is also a huge swimming pool and big lawn and braai areas at the pool.
Nearby attractions include: Clarens, SANPARKS Golden Gate, Bethlehem, Ficksburg and Lesotho.
